We recommend Mahogany, Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Epay. These are all extremely durable woods that require very little care, are comfortable under foot and are durable. Epay in particular is an extremely hard wood. These woods are more expensive initially but the upkeep cost is minimal.
We fasten deck boards with stainless steel screws.
Redwood and western red cedar are beautiful but too soft for deck wood.
Pressure treated lumber has been a very popular choice for deck construction. It is typically made from southern yellow pine and impregnated with a variety of chemicals including arsenic. It requires successive treatments of waterproofing on almost a yearly basis, otherwise it tends to splinter. Initial cost is less than our recommended woods but upkeep is expensive.
Some of the synthetic products are attractive from a maintenance view but absorb heat and can become excessively hot underfoot.
As you may guess, we love the warmth and charm of natural materials.
